You got me tearing up over here. Iām so happy to hear that you benefited some from that thread ā„ļø Enjoy the newfound readership that you absolutely deserve.
Annette, what a gorgeous poem soaked in a colorful richness! You had me at the beginning ādeep in the heart of summerā ā I love the reference to the sun sinking in egg yolk. Thank you for sharing & congrats on your publication of this piece! š
Thank you for sharing these beautiful poems. That very first stanza of "Worker Bees" hits so hard, right where I need it.
I'm going to share "Fruit (A Love Letter To Your Branches And Roots)" by Rachel Kann. I have long felt that tree metaphors were appropriate for me, and when I first came across this poem, her encouragement brought me to tears.
I'm so grateful I came across your Substack (than you Aidan Jones!)... what a nourishing breath of poetry and earth. Thank you for creating this beautiful online space.

The peace of wild things for July: Here is my July poem:
July is Yellow
Deep in the heart of summer
July shines yellow
Flowers turn cadmium
Days slow to mellow
Stellas wink and nod off
To the music of lassitude
Tawny afternoons
Slip quietly by
The sun sinks into egg yolk
As evenings fade to gold
Mustard Yarrow hides against a fence
Coreopsis whispers bold
Lemon dreams on hold
Dripping shades of yellow
Fair blooms on ripe vines
Slow-down time
Lush grass nuzzle the minutes
With soft slumber
Lethargia of assuming
Nothing
Inertia attained
