BREAKING NEWS: The World is Coming Alive Again
Everything is wet, muddy, and chaotic and I am in love with it all.
Dear Friends,
The world is coming alive again and so is that uncontainable joy that erupts the first morning you step outside and hear the birds singing again after months of quiet darkness. This poem was inspired by my recent morning walks and the swift arrival of spring in all it’s bright, chaotic glory.
BREAKING NEWS: The World is Coming Alive Again
After Lyndsay Rush
I am reporting live from the old railway path that runs between
the edge of the valley and the shore of the lake. The tongues
on my duck boots are lapping up the last of the snow. My socks
will be soaked by the time I arrive back home but I do not care.
I am too busy documenting every sign of life crawling forth from
the quiet darkness out into a world frantically spiralling towards doom
but that will never stop the urgency for life to keep recreating itself.
The birds are back inscribing messages across the sky in winged
cursive, the branches of the willow are turning gold, little streams
flow in all directions, and somewhere the first housefly is trying
to sneak in through a cracked window. Everything is wet, muddy,
and chaotic but I am in love with it all. This beauty that keeps returning,
this beauty that has been here all along insisting that we break free
of our trance for just a moment and witness the lavender petals
of the crocus emerge from the dirt like cupped hands holding a prayer.
